The Benchmade Hidden Canyon Hunter is a classic. In fact, it’s such a classic that one must differentiate between the now-discontinued 15016 models and the newer 15017 models.
The classic Hidden Canyon Hunters were available with either Dymondwood® or G-10 scales (mine has the G-10) and Benchamde’s refined CPM S30V powder metallurgy steel. The G-10 version came with a black Kydex sheath and the wood version came with a brown leather sheath.
The sheath shown with mine is an aftermarket Kydex sheath from Armatus Carry Solutions featuring perfect, rattle-free retention and a cut-out that allows for a full grip on the knife when you draw. (They offer unique sheaths for both the 15016 and 15017 knives.)
The older and newer knives are similar but not identical in size, with the original measuring 6.32″ overall with a 2.67″ blade and the newer version coming in at 6.42″ overall with a 2.79″ blade.
The newer 15017 model is available in two styles: a CPM S30V blade with stabilized wood scales and a leather sheath or a CPM S90V blade with orange Richlite scales and an orange Boltaron sheath.
Both the classic and newer models offer excellent ergonomics, impeccable fit and finish, and a capable drop-point blade with a deep belly.
All versions of the knife feature thoughtful touches such as jimping on the front and rear of the blade, a sharpening choil, and a lanyard hole.
Final Thoughts
While the Hidden Canyon Hunter is marketed as a hunting and skinning knife, it also serves as a well-rounded EDC blade, offering tremendous capability in a compact and lightweight package.
The knife is suitable for belt, neck, or pocket carry (the latter is best accomplished with the addition of the fantastic UltiClip Slim 3.3 to a Kydex or Boltaron sheath), and it makes a very competent alternative to the traditional folding pocket knife as an EDC option.
